Moxie — I’m sorry what happened happened, and am sorry your family is facing so much right now. It’s hard to hold a pity party when there are so many other large pity events on the calendar. (That was meant to be funny: the day after my ex-husband announced he wanted out of our marriage, my cousin, accompanied by her three-year-old son, found her father unexpectedly dead, so as I later told folks, my breakup wasn’t even the worst thing that happened in my family that weekend.)

My thing is to go to a remote location, and crank out a bunch of work during the day, and read books like crazy at night. Since I work at home, my apartment doesn’t cut it, but since I can work from anywhere, any location with an internet connection does it. I’ve done that a lot recently, not because I’ve felt lonely, but because I needed the grounding it provides.

I like yoga, and have learned to tolerate exercise, but it doesn’t take me to that grounded place. Meditation, forget it, I’d rather watch paint dry. But books take me back to my nerdy childhood comfort zone, and I don’t even have to eat the crappy comfort food that unfortunately contributed to the body I have today. When you can find something like that, then you can be alone without being lonely, or without engaging in other behavior to satisfy the cravings that is unhealthy and counterproductive.

As schlocky as it may sound, throw yourself into a hobby of some sort.
